1000 Hours of Reading
MISSION:
The overall goal of 1000 Hours of Reading is to provide students Kindergarten through eighth grade from both public and private schools in the area, with an opportunity to engage in and become excited about reading by participating in a reading program implemented after-school and at home. Participants are reinforced for their reading activities by receiving free books. Frequent reading develops reading fluency and establishes habits that will encourage life-long reading.
MISSION:
- Students receive passports to document their literary travels.
- Free, new books are donated at the completion of designated number of hours.
- Supports families in building libraries in their homes and supports teachers in building libraries in their classrooms.
- Includes reading events at local public libraries.
- Diagnostic assessments as students commence participation in the program.
- Progress is monitored through daily assessment logs.
- Program is adaptable to a variety of settings including schools, after-school and summer programs.
- Communication between program staff, families, schools and after-school programs.
