Scholarship Opportunities

Unless children have strong education and strong families and strong communities and decent housing, it’s not enough to go sit in at a lunch counter... Education is a precondition to survival in America today.

ULMS SCHOLARSHIP

The Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle (ULMS)  is pleased to offer two scholarships annually to support inspiring students embarking in their post-secondary journey.  For nearly 90 years, the ULMS has been at the forefront of creating opportunities for Black Americans to empower themselves and their communities.  We are motivated by a vision that a strong Black community makes a better Seattle. Our Education Department opens the doors of opportunity by giving students, at all levels of their educational experience, resources and confidence necessary to compete academically. The ULMS Scholarship Program includes awards funded by various donors in order to support students needing financial assistance to begin, continue, or complete their post-secondary education.  Awardees have demonstrated promising merit in leadership, community service, or scholastics.  The Incentive Award is $2,500.

Selection Process

The scholarship committee meets in November to review applications.

  • First—the Education Scholarship Committee evaluates applicant eligibility based on financial need, academic achievement and funder focus. In the case of equivalent academic achievement, students with the greatest financial need are given priority.
  • Second—eligible Applicants are interviewed in person by a member of the committee.
  • Third—the full committee reviews interview recommendations and makes final award recommendations to the ULMS President and Chief Development Officer for approval.

Awardees and applicants are notified of the results. The scholarships is distributed during the ULMS Annual Breakfast. Unless specified by the funder, scholarships are not renewable and are only applicable to one school year.
