For more information on how you can support and get involved at the Urban League, call 206-461-3792. Friday, December 14 2007 Read about the 2007 breakfast highlights here. Friday, June 29 2007 A couple of downpours did not stop 110 golfers from enjoying the Urban League’s annual golf tournament at beautiful Trilogy Golf Club at Redmond Ridge on June 29th. Everyone had a fun day of golf with great prizes, raffle items, delightful networking opportunities, and camaraderie, thanks in part to tournament sponsor, Microsoft. Congratulations to the 1st place winners, a foursome from one of the event sponsors, RAFN – Frank Ambrey, Gregg George, Kurth Connell, and Stephanie Zimmer. It was an especially big day for Stephanie: not only did she lead her group to 1st place, she won both of the ladies’ contests, KP and the longest drive. Way to go Stephanie! In addition to supporting programs and operations of the Urban League, the tournament also supported the Rainier Beach High School Football team. Of the net funds raised, $33,000, the League honored their pledge to the football team to pay for food and tutorial assistance for the 2007-2008 school year. The day of golf, the lunch which followed, and fantastic prizes – including two $500 Macy’s gift cards donated by Jack Arndt, and two roundtrip Alaska Airlines tickets valued at $870 each donated by Brad Tilden – lead participants to remark “the tournament was first class” “I had a great time” “the event was well-organized” “the food was excellent” and “this was fantastic!” Many thanks to our generous sponsors, board of directors, committee members, supporters, volunteers, and wonderful staff for an exceptionally successful benefit golf tournament. As the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle has worked since the end of September 2005 to support the nearly 7,500 evacuees in Washington State, nearly 1800 in King County alone, the holidays were no exception.
Just as important as providing clothing, food, housing, transportation and employment services, in partnership with Seattle’s KUBE 93.3FM radio, over 1,000 toys were collected by KUBE’S annual “Miracle” toy drive, and given to the ULMS to distribute specifically to evacuee children in our area.
June 7, 2005 The Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle, in partnership with The National Urban League and the Microsoft Corporation, offered the program Youth IT Challenge to local area minority high school students. The program was designed to promote proficiency in technology skills and entrepreneurship within minority communities.
ULMS, along with eight other Urban League affiliates around the country, recruited 4-5 teams each that worked over a 10 week period to develop business plans that incorporated technology. The local competition, held in April, narrowed the competition down to one local team – Interlink. Interlink proposed a company called Search It! Search It! would provide customized internet based scholarship, grant and loan searches for college bound students, teachers, counselors and organizations.
On June 7th Interlink competed with the 8 other finalists at the National competition in New York City. The competition was fierce, judges asked tough questions, and in the end there were 3 winners: 1st Place went to St. Paul, Minnesota, 2nd Place to our very own Seattle team Interlink, and 3rd Place to Washington, DC. The first place winner walked away with a prize package valued at $15,000 in hardware, software and savings bonds. The 2nd place team won Digital cameras and a flash card. The 3rd place team won a Dell pocket DC and a Music Match gift certificate. The Celebrity guest speaker for the day was Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, President and CEO of Bad Boy Entertainment. June 4, 2005
The National Urban League is conducting a series of Mental Health Thought Leaders Conferences across the country. The Seattle affiliate is happy to be part of this project. The forum is designed to create awareness among a cross section of leaders in the black community about the importance of mental health as a public health issue. Roundtable discussion will provide research and practical information on critical issues of access and utilization of mental health services for African Americans.
The Urban League is the largest, national, African American provider of community health education services. Fighting for access to appropriate mental health services for African Americans, and eliminating barriers to mental health treatment, remains a central priority of The League and its affiliates. The Thought Leaders Conference will convene policy leaders, clinicians, clergy, community organizers, epidemiologists, allied health professionals, researchers and consumers to discuss current issues. Strategies will be developed to better understand, and to help minimize, the impact of mental illness on our community. May 17, 2005 On May 17th, there was a luncheon for previous and new donors for all Urban League programs. The purpose was to show our donors how their donated dollars have been at work and to introduce new donors to the League. There was a presentation of what is going on in Urban League programs and we recognize the efforts of our unsung heroes. The unsung heroes are folks who are volunteers who are the lifeblood of our programs. April 22, 2005
The goal of this program is to stimulate the ambition of
minority youth to engage in entrepreneurship in order to be self sufficient
in future business opportunities. The sessions are held at the Urban League
of Metropolitan Seattle each Saturday. The students are instructed by Microsoft
employees and assisted by numerous volunteers. The winners of the local competition
in April will have the opportunity to compete against eight other cities at
the National competition held in New York City in June.
