ULMS History Synopsis
The Urban league of Metropolitan Seattle (ULMS) was established in 1929 and incorporated in 1936 as one of the 115 affiliates of the National Urban League (NUL) www.nul.org. The Civil Rights movement during the 1960’s attributed much success to the development of the Urban League’s programs that aim to help individuals and families obtain fair and equal opportunities in the areas of: health care, housing, employment, and education.
Urban League Village Apartments
In January of 2008, ULMS opened the doors to the Urban League Village Apartments at Coleman School. Coleman School was first established in 1909 and has beeb cherished as the first Seattle Public School to hire African American teachers in the State of Washington.
Coleman now operates as a multifunctional tourist attraction accomodating 36 low income housing units along with the Pacific Northwest's first African American Museum (NAAM). Visit www.naamnw.org for more information.
